Immigration, Migration & Settlement: Canada & the EU

On Thursday December 8, 2016, the EUS program, the EUCE, and the Let's Talk Science program will host a workshop for highschool students.

The day features three different frames. The first is in the EU and the migration crisis; the second is on resettlement in Canada related to the recent refugee crisis; and the third is a refugee simulation in which students go through an exercise to build empathy and understanding of the plight of refugees in general.

Agenda:

  • 9:00am - Arrival and registration
  • 9:30am - Welcome and Intro to the EU by Dr. Valerie D'Erman (Political Science, UVic)
  • 10:00am - Issues with Resettlement: Feature lecture and Q&A with Álvaro Moreno (Director, Settlement Program, Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society)
  • 11:00am - Refugee Simulation and Transition to Group Research
  • 12:00pm - Pizza lunch, poster work
  • 1:15pm - Poster presentations and judging
  • 2:00pm - Final presentations, closing plenary, and awards
  • 2:30pm - Departure from UVic

Immigration, migration & xenophobia: Canada & the EU

On December 11th, the EUS program, the EUCE, and the Let's Talk Science program hosted a symposium for high school students

Immigration is a growing issue, and is of interest to many different academic fields. The symposium aimed to engage students in exploring the increasing necessity and desire for immigration, as well as the effects of increasing transportation and interconnectedness.
